Where to buy raw milk in the UK
Accessible in England, Wales and Northern Ireland through direct sales; banned in Scotland.

The United Kingdom has a divided regulatory map for raw milk: accessible in England, Wales and Northern Ireland through direct sales; completely banned in Scotland. The split dates from 1983, when Scotland banned raw milk sales after serious disease outbreaks, a decision England did not follow.
Legal framework (verified against FSA and legislation.gov.uk)
Selling raw cows' drinking milk is legal in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, but only directly to the final consumer through:
- registered producer farms at the farm gate itself (including vending machines and direct online sales) or farm catering - farmers at registered farmers' markets - distributors with a vehicles-shop licence, such as the traditional milk round
It is illegal to sell it in any other setting, including supermarkets and shops. Sales of raw drinking milk and raw cream are completely prohibited in Scotland.
The warning label is mandatory by law (The Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013, Schedule 6, para. 7A): "This milk has not been heat-treated and may therefore contain organisms harmful to health."
Farms must be registered with the FSA (Food Standards Agency), undergo hygiene inspection twice a year, and the herd must be brucellosis- and tuberculosis-free. Cows' milk is overseen by the FSA; goat, sheep and buffalo milk by local authorities.
How to buy
Farm gate The most common channel. Buy at the registered farm: the farmer fills your bottle from a refrigerated tank or dispenses from an on-site machine.
Delivery and online Several English farms run doorstep delivery or subscriptions. Hook & Son (East Sussex, organic, traditional dairy herd) and Hurdlebrook Farm (Somerset) are the two best-established delivery services as of mid-2026. They ship chilled in insulated packaging; milk typically arrives within 24–48 hours of milking.
Farmers' markets Registered producers may sell at registered markets, transporting the milk chilled in sealed containers bearing the health warning.
The official FSA register
The FSA publishes the list of approved raw cows' drinking milk producers together with their latest inspection rating. As of August 2026 it lists 161 producers across England, Wales and Northern Ireland; 155 rated "Broadly Compliant" or better. It is the most reliable source to verify a farm is authorised before travelling.

Sussex and the South East Hook & Son (East Sussex, national delivery), Plaw Hatch Farm (West Sussex, community farm with shop and dairy), Tablehurst Farm (East Sussex, biodynamic), Goodwood Estate (West Sussex).

The Pennines and the North Gazegill Organics (Lancashire, organic, national delivery), Emma's Dairy (Rimington, Lancashire), the farms of Cheshire and the Ribble valley, Wheelbirks Parlour (Northumberland, Jersey milk), Fen Farm Dairy (Suffolk, cow and buffalo, online delivery too).

The Scottish exception
The 1983 ban remains the UK's most restrictive dairy policy: no raw cows' milk for human consumption in Scotland, no farm-gate exception, no machines. If you are in Scotland: (1) travel to England (no customs barrier for food within the UK), or (2) matured raw-milk cheeses from Scottish artisan makers, which are legal.
What to ask the producer
- Are you registered with the FSA as a raw drinking milk producer? (the register is public) - When was your last inspection? (twice a year is mandatory) - How old is this milk? - Is the herd brucellosis- and TB-free?
