Where to buy raw milk in Germany
Farm machines on every corner and legal retail: Europe's most practical raw milk market.

Germany is one of the most practical European countries for raw milk access: widespread farm vending machines plus one of the very few legal retail routes for raw milk anywhere in the world (Vorzugsmilch). Both rural areas and the outskirts of major cities have real access.
Legal framework (verified against Tier-LMHV and Wikipedia with sources)
Germany has two legal routes for raw milk for direct human consumption, both rooted in the Tierische Lebensmittel-Hygieneverordnung (Tier-LMHV):
Rohmilch ab Hof, direct farm-gate sale (§ 17 Abs. 4 Tier-LMHV) The exact requirements set by the regulation: 1. the milk is handed over at the dairy farm itself 2. the milk is produced and treated on that same farm 3. the milk is from the day of sale or the day before 4. at the point of sale, clearly visible and legible: "Rohmilch, vor dem Verzehr abkochen" (raw milk, boil before consuming) 5. the sale has been notified in advance to the competent authority
Vorzugsmilch, certified raw milk for retail sale Retail sale of raw milk is in principle prohibited in Germany; the exception is Vorzugsmilch: milk bottled under enhanced hygiene requirements, from the day or the day before, produced on an officially approved farm. It carries a use-by date of max. 96 hours from milking and the notice "Aufbewahren bei höchstens 8 °Celsius" (store at max. 8 °C). It is excluded from collective catering (school canteens).
Vorzugsmilch is exceptional in Europe, one of the very few routes by which raw milk can reach the conventional retail shelf.
How to find it
Milchautomaten / Milchtankstellen (vending machines) The most widespread access point. Germany has an extensive network of on-farm machines across the country. Typical prices 1.00–1.50 €/litre (cheaper than conventional retail).
Search terms: Milchautomat, Milchtankstelle, Rohmilchautomat, Milchzapfstelle.
Hofläden (farm shops) Many direct-selling farms run a Hofladen with limited hours (often weekends or afternoons only). They sell raw milk, raw cream, butter, eggs and cheese. Check opening times before travelling.
Vorzugsmilch in shops In organic shops and selected supermarkets: the label says "Vorzugsmilch". Do not confuse with "traditionell hergestellt" (gently pasteurised milk) or with Heumilch (a feeding distinction, not a pasteurisation one).

FAQ
What is the difference between Rohmilch and Vorzugsmilch? Rohmilch ab Hof may only be sold at the farm itself, from the day or the day before, with the boil warning. Vorzugsmilch is produced under enhanced requirements and may be sold bottled in shops, with a 96-hour use-by date from milking and a max. 8 °C storage notice.
Do the machines run 24 hours? Most Milchautomaten are 24h (some of those listed advertise it: Kühnle Milchautomat 24H). Others on farms keep limited hours, check the display or website before a long trip.
Can I find raw milk in Berlin, Munich or Frankfurt without leaving the city? In Berlin and other cities, organic shops (e.g. Denns Biomarkt) sell Vorzugsmilch; the only raw milk legal in shops. For machine Rohmilch, the farms are 30–60 minutes away.
Is Heumilch raw milk? Not necessarily. Heumilch distinguishes feeding (hay, no silage), not heat treatment. Many Heumilch producers also sell Rohmilch, but they are different things.
