Farm gate, vending machines and retail: France's three legal channels open at the same time.

France has one of the most accessible raw milk markets in Europe. Three legal channels exist simultaneously, farm gate, vending machines, and packaged retail, which means you can find raw milk whether you live in rural Normandy or central Paris.

The current framework is the Arrêté du 13 juillet 2012, which regulates direct-to-consumer sales of raw milk from cattle, goats, sheep, and domestic equids. Any producer wishing to sell raw milk must first obtain authorization from the préfet of their department. Authorization is granted without time limit and without a cap on volume. The herd must be certified free of brucellosis and tuberculosis.

Unlike Italy, France imposes no geographic restriction on where a vending machine can be placed. A French machine can legally be installed at any distance from its farm of origin, provided the operator declares its location to the préfet of the département where it sits.

Packaged raw milk (sealed and labeled at the farm) may reach retailers under the same authorization. This is what makes Biocoop distribution possible: the arrêté explicitly allows this channel, distinguishing France from countries where only farm-gate sales are permitted.

Three ways to find it

1. Vending machines (distributeurs automatiques de lait cru) The most widespread access point outside of farms. Machines operate 24h, dispense at €1.00/liter, and are legally required to maintain milk between 0°C and 4°C. You bring your own glass bottle or buy one at the machine. Milk must come from a maximum of two successive milkings and is replaced daily.

Search terms: distributeur de lait cru, fontaine à lait, distributeur automatique de lait. Also searchable via Google Maps with these terms.

2. Farm gate (vente directe à la ferme) The original and most direct channel. The farm must be authorized and the herd certified healthy. Milk is sold in sealed containers filled at the farm. DLC is J+3 from milking. Ask the producer about herd testing, A2A2 genetics if relevant, and how quickly the milk moves from milking to sale.

3. Packaged retail (Biocoop and specialist stores) The most widely distributed packaged lait cru in France is produced by Maison Bernard Gaborit, a family dairy in Maulévrier, Maine-et-Loire, founded in 1979. The operation combines its own organic farm with a network of local partner farmers raising Jersey cows under Bio Cohérence certification. Raw milk is cooled to 3°C and packaged without homogenization or heat treatment. Bernard Gaborit distributes packaged lait cru entier through Biocoop, France's leading organic grocery chain.

Biocoop has over 700 stores nationwide: their website has a store locator. Bernard Gaborit products are also available via their own online shop for home delivery.

The real map: where it actually is

The French raw-milk landscape is wider than most guides admit. Our directory work logged 800+ raw-milk points of sale across the country, and the regional distribution has a surprise: Île-de-France leads with 240+, ahead of Bretagne (~100), Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (~80), Pays de la Loire (~70) and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (~60). Paris is arguably the best-served big city in Europe for packaged raw milk: the specialist organic chains stock it across the capital (Naturalia alone lists 40+ stores carrying it, Biocoop over 700 nationwide, plus Satoriz, La Vie Claire and Marcel & Fils in their regions).

Farms that sell it, by region

The farm-gate layer is thinner, a few dozen direct-sale farms; but it is the channel where you see the herd:

- Normandie: GAEC Saint-Auvieu; La ferme du manoir d'Anctoville (also raw-milk cheese); La Chèvre Rit (goat). - Bretagne: Ferme de Kerheu (Finistère); La Ferme des Délices. - Pays de la Loire: Maison Bernard Gaborit (Maulévrier, Maine-et-Loire, the packaged-raw-milk reference); Ferme des Roches; Fromagerie Beillevaire (Machecoul, boutique). - Île-de-France: La Ferme de Moigny; Domaine de la Chalotterie, real farm-gate options within reach of Paris. - Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes: La Ferme de l'Adroit and Ferme de Sainte-Luce (both also raw-milk cheese); La Ferme du Ponant; Les 2 Chapelles; La Ferme du Mont. - Hauts-de-France: La Ferme du Vinage (also raw-milk cheese); Au Rond Point Fermier; Les Douces Folies; La ferme du Bonheur. - Occitanie: Ferme de Pelissou. PACA: Rebuffel François. Centre-Val de Loire: GAEC le Petit Chambord; La Crèmerie de Victoire (Guéret). Grand Est: Chèvrerie de l'Est (goat).

What to look for on the label

Any legitimate raw milk sold in France must carry: - "Lait cru"; explicitly stated - "À conserver à +4°C maximum": storage temperature - DLC (date limite de consommation): J+3 from milking - Authorization number from the préfecture; confirms the producer is registered - Health warning for sensitive groups (children under 3, pregnant women, immunocompromised, elderly)

If any of these elements are missing, the product is either mislabeled or not following the legal framework.

What to ask the producer

- Is the herd certified free of brucellosis and tuberculosis? (legally required; ask to see the certification if buying regularly) - Jersey or Guernsey cows? (A2A2 genetics if relevant to you) - Time from milking to sale? - Is it mixed from multiple days' milkings? (legal maximum: two successive milkings only)

Raw milk cheese, the parallel market

France has the richest tradition of raw milk cheese in Europe. Camembert de Normandie AOP, Comté AOP, Époisses AOP, Roquefort AOP, Reblochon AOP, and dozens of other PDO/AOP cheeses are produced exclusively with raw milk by legal requirement of their specifications. If you cannot find liquid raw milk locally, artisan raw milk cheese from these AOPs is available in fromageries, markets, and directly from the affinage producers.

FAQ

Is raw milk sold in French supermarkets? Packaged raw milk (Bernard Gaborit) is sold in Biocoop organic stores, which are specialist, not conventional supermarkets. Standard supermarkets (Carrefour, Leclerc, Intermarché) do not stock it.

Can I buy raw milk at a farmers' market in France? Yes, if the producer is authorized and sells their own milk at the market. They must bring the milk refrigerated and in sealed containers. Ask to see their authorization number.

How long does raw milk keep in France? DLC of J+3 (three days from milking). Store at 4°C maximum. The milk will keep but the freshness profile changes significantly after 24–36 hours, most producers recommend consuming within 2 days of purchase.
